Global Change: A powerful tool
When working in Primavera P6 Professional you may need to make massive changes in your planning data, whereas related to Planning fields, Cost Fields, Resource Management Fields or others you will find a tool which is Global Change very useful.
With conditional statements, you will be able to select a group of activities, project expenses or resource assignments to make changes in their respective fields. “Then” and “Else” logic is applied after the conditional statement is created.
Several processes in your Enterprise can be applied through the implementation of Global Changes in Primavera.
Use Case: Let’s say you are Executing the project plan, and you want to implement a process on which Technical Users are updating each of them their activities. An Activity Owner needs to control these inputs in order to approve them. In order to do that, the Technical User will update a User Defined Field for, for example, Actual Start, Actual Finish and/or Exp. Finish, if the Activity Owner agrees with the update for the activity, then he/she can mark the activity as green, if not, he can mark the activity as red.
A project planner can apply a global change to make the actual field on the plan equal to the inputs of the Technical User, of course, as long as the Activity Owner marked the activity as green.
Your project may look like this:
The technical users will input their values (can be hours or cost as well):
The Activity Owner will review this:
The project planner will apply this global change:
Note: the logic behind this is to have the actual values in Primavera equal to those input
by the TechUser if the Approval field is green.
If not, do nothing. This is done activity to activity by the Global Change
Then, the project planner will re-schedule with the changes applied:
