Dynamic Filter for Critical path
During the planning phase, some considerations must be followed, like for example the end date of the project, milestone dates, WBS milestones, or critical path (this one being discussed today). As a planner, you may have a very good idea of the activity network and need to check if the plan you structured is as going as expected. The critical path is a way to do this and isn’t exclusively applicable to the planning phase, during execution and control the critical path will change and adapt depending upon completion of activities.
Primavera will allow you to control your critical path with a dynamic filter, this means that the filter will adapt to a condition that as a user you specified once and will not to worry about it again later on.
Let’s put a practical example: a company needs to control a plan by its critical path, but the plans are heavily loaded with information related to activities that are or aren’t in the critical path.
The idea for the company is to check the critical path from the current date plus 2 months, because the need is to check the next critical activities to be performed, or the one critical that is being performed.
We have the following plan, which is already started and has several activities:
Activities in red are critical, green means non-critical which are in progress or not started, blue means finished
or in progress (before data date).
So, the idea is to create a filter in Primavera Professional to see only the activities that are critical within the
next two months. To do that the filter must be the following:
The result will be the following:
This result will work at any given time, due to the way the filter was configured. The data date is the dynamic
field being used to make the filter adaptable to the current condition.
Note 1: a second way to do this is by using the current date, but keep in mind that your project may have
a different scheduled date than the current date.
Note 2: remember that to reach the filter window you must right-click the list of activities and select the option filter. This will prompt the filter management window.
